Self-Assessment Worksheet
Learning Objective #1: Examine how attitudes toward linguistic standards empower and oppress language users.
My paraphrase: Explore how views on language standards can affect speakers positively and negatively.
Evidence of learning: In my LLN, I wrote about being judged for my English when I first came to America. A boy tagged at me for not speaking “proper English,” and that moment made me feel small and powerless. This also connects to Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue,” an essay we did throughout the semester, where she explains how language can be used to judge people and make them feel “less than,” but also how people can reclaim their voices. After reading this, I see how she wrote the essay without following any standard. Writing this helped me understand how language standards can both empower and oppress an individual.
My score 0-5: 5
Learning Objective #2: Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.
My paraphrase: Practice writing and reading different types of writing for different purposes.
Evidence of learning: My personal narrative focuses on storytelling and emotion. In my synthesis essay, I used research, statistics, and logical reasoning. These are very different genres. Switching between these writing styles showed me how different rhetorical situations require different approaches.
My score 0-5: 5
Learning Objective #3: Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.
My paraphrase: Learn ways to read better and improve my writing through drafting, revising, peer feedback, and instructor feedback.
Evidence of learning: For both major essays, I wrote multiple drafts and used feedback from the writing center, peers, and the instructor. I revised the structure, fixed unclear sentences, added research if needed, and made my writing stronger. I also practiced careful reading when reviewing credible articles for my synthesis essay.
My score 0-5: 4
Learning Objective #4: Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.
My paraphrase: Using important writing tools like tone, purpose, and audience to make my writing more effective.
Evidence of learning: In my synthesis essay, I used logos by including scientific studies, pathos by describing my personal experiences seeing students vape, and ethos by using credible research. In my narrative, I used sensory details, tone, and reflection to connect with readers emotionally. Practicing these helped me understand how rhetorical strategies make writing stronger.
My score 0-5: 5
Learning Objective #5: Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.
My paraphrase: Use online tools, research websites, and college resources to communicate with different readers.
Evidence of learning: Used online CCNY databases, YouTube videos, and government reports for my synthesis essay. It also helped me strengthen my skills to format my writing in MLA, organize sources digitally, and find scholarly sources from the library databases during the library session we had. These tools helped me reach academic audiences more effectively.
My score 0-5: 4
Learning Objective #6: Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate those sources for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.
My paraphrase: Find reliable sources and check if they are trustworthy and up-to-date.
Evidence of learning: peer-reviewed studies, academic journal articles, and government reports such as the “Surgeon General’s Report” for my synthesis essay. I checked the authors, dates, and purposes of each source. I also identified biased advertising by vape companies and influencers. This helped me choose strong, credible evidence.
My score 0-5: 5
Learning Objective #7: Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argument.
My paraphrase: Write essays that clearly show my opinion and use sources correctly to support it.
Evidence of learning: I took a clear stand that vaping harms Gen Z in my synthesis essay. I summarized research, analyzed studies, and combined sources to build a strong argument. I also connected the research to real experiences I’ve seen in school. This helped me practice synthesis and argumentation.
My score 0-5: 4
Learning Objective #8: Practice citing sources accurately and consistently.
My paraphrase: Use MLA citations the correct way and give credit to all sources.
Evidence of learning: I practiced quoting, paraphrasing, and properly citing sources and videos. Also, following the “Integrating Sources into Your Writing Handout” helped me to learn how to cite it properly.
My score 0-5: 4
